Couch to K2

Couch to K2
End of another year. Time to reflect, and plan for life in the New Year. Right? Maybe not as we did set goals last year around the same time, but they got lost in the couch - like the TV remote. Fortunately, the remote was easy to find, but goals? They seem to have a special hiding place in the couch, and somehow they magically reappear the same time next year. If that’s not magic – I don’t know what is… Speaking of couches, Josh Clark who ignited the running revolution with his program couch to 5k had a theory about interval running which made him become a lifelong runner. The funny thing is that he absolutely hated everything about running, but his theory and system worked. So, do checkout his story. It’s all over the internet, and it might inspire you. For me, one of the key learnings...

It's not good enough!

It's not good enough!
It never was and it never will be. Nothing ever is…But that does not stop doers from getting things done, and moving on to the next thing. Being perfect is an illusion created by ourselves in the hope to bring our A game everytime. However, the truth is that what’s good and outstanding today, will most probably haunt us in the future as we will look back at it and say ‘ I did that/wrote that/painted that’. What a load of crap. I could have, should have done better. And that’s probably true. But the important thing is that I got it done. Again and again, and that way I will become better at it with time. So whatever you are thinking of doing. Do it, get it out there and move on to the next thing…over and over again – till you find your BIG THING which will eventually be...

Do you WIIFM or WIIFY?

Do you WIIFM or WIIFY?
So which one are you at a networking event? What's in it for me - WIIFM Type or what's in it for you - WIIFY Type? I have seen it a 100 times. People come to networking events with one mission. Meet as many people as possible or maybe a few. Exchange business cards with one thing on their mind - WIIFM. Although the approach works short term, but does not add value to the other party involved. Plus this approach does not create the 'word of mouth' one is looking for - which by the way is the true essence of networking. On the contrary, some of the best networkers I have seen flip the question. They are genuinely interested in helping the other person, and in the process they are able to expand their circle of influence. This approach just multiplies everything. When you are genuinely interested...

More Miserables…

More Miserables…
It's an age old phrase 'When the cat is away the mice will play' - which is fine. But if you are not even playing, and just being miserable, because the boss is not there to tell you what to do....you need help...not from someone else but from yourself. Last week I met two executives who face similar problems with their team. One of them is an advertising executive, and she got back from her annual leave and not to her surprise - the team didn't get anything done while she was gone. The other executive is a CEO of one of the leading NGOs, and she was telling me that her team focuses more on her coordinates while she is out for meetings to raise funds instead of getting things done at their end. If you happen to fall into any of the above categories, and can't function without...

For whom the bell curve tolls…

For whom the bell curve tolls…
Every year The Bell Curve makes an entry pushing managers to put people into buckets of high, medium and low performance. I haven't met a single person who loves the bell curve because of its effectiveness. It's usually used because it provides a framework, has numbers involved and it's easy to present to top management. The good news is that I met a non-conformist HR Leader (endangered specie - if I may say so) who is not only going to get the bell curve out of the annual appraisal process but also delink the the performance review with annual salary increments. Alarm Bells.... I know. You might be thinking that then what is point of doing performance reviews? Well according to the non-conformist 'Salary increment and other cash benefits need to be linked with company profitability. Performance reviews need to aligned with people development, job enrichment and possible promotions' Hmmm..Personally,...
